Paul Hogarth was born in Kendal, Cumbria, on 4 October 1917. He was christened Arthur Paul but preferred to use Paul as his first name. His family name was Hoggarth but he subsequently adopted the spelling Hogarth. In 1923 the family moved to Manchester where Hogarth attended the Manchester School of Art from 1933(4) to 1936 before moving to London and studying at St Martin's School of Art. Robert (Von Ranke) Graves was born in London in 1895. He attended King's College School and Rokeby School, Wimbledon, Copthorne School, Sussex, Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey, 1907-14. In 1926, he received a B. Litt. From St. John's College, Oxford.
